Matthew 22:37-39

Growth in Love

Matthew 22:37-39 "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbour as yourself."

Growth in Love is one of the greatest indicators that we are growing in our relationship with God and is found in our willingness to love, as God is love. Love is not just something that He does, it is what He is. It follows then that we are never more like God than when we love. How easily we may look at these two commandments and say quickly, ‘I love the Lord’, yet struggle with loving our neighbour, however, Jesus makes the second commandment as important as the first.

We cannot fulfil the first commandment, to love God, without obeying the second command, to love our neighbour, see 1 John 4: 20. Neither can we avoid this problem by narrowing our definition of ‘neighbour’ to simply people in our neighbourhood, or to those we have something in common with, like our race, our economic or intellectual level, or religion etc. In the parable of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10: 29– 37, Jesus makes the whole world our neighbour by qualifying anyone God puts in my path, or who needs us, as our ‘neighbour’.
